An Ultrastructural Study on the Nerve cell Bodies of the Brain from Butterfly, Pieris raple L., in Morphogenesis

Abstract
An ultrastructural study on the nerve cell bodies of the brain from the butterfly, Pieris apae L., was performed in four stages of 5-day-old adult, adult immediately after last moult, pup/adult moult and 6-day-old pupa.
1. Nerve cell bodies were divided inte two main groups; the one with the secretory granules in the cytoplasm through the brains of four stages, and the other one without the secretory granules. The former was categolized into type ¥³ cell body. The latter was subdivided into three types by the differences of their sizes and nucleoplasmic index; type ¥° , type ¥± and type ¥² cell bodies.
2. The distributions of four kinds of cell bodies in the brains were similar through four stages. The protocerebrums included p-type ¥°, ¥±, ¥² and ¥³ cell bodies in the pars intercerebralis. And the calyx contained p-type ¥°, ¥± and ¥² cell bodies. The deutocerebrum had p-type ¥°, ¥± and ¥² cell bodies. And tritocerebrum also included t-type ¥°, ¥± and ¥² cell bodies.
3. The cell bodies contained considerable arrays of smooth endoplasmic reticulum. The rough endoplasmic reticulum were abundantly observed in the adult immediately after last moult. A number of Golgi complexes were developed in all of four type cell bodies of four stages, especially in type 1 , II and IV cell bodies. All nerve cell bodies also included mitochondria, lysosomes and ribosomes. The. secretory granules observed in p-type 1V ,cell bodies were released from the cisternae of Golgi complex.
4. The cell body of round shape was abundantly observed in the brain of 6-day-old pupa, but the irregular cell body was abuntantly included in the brain of 5-day-old adult.
5. The secretory granules surrounded by a single unit membrane in p-type ¥³ cell bodies were circular in outline and exhibited a wide range of diameter from 1000 to 4000A. They possessed electron dense materials within themselves.
6. The formations of secretory granules in type ¥³ cell bodies in four stages are considered to be studied more.
